💡 Feeding Tip: Hay should make up most of your rabbits’ diet, so buying it in bulk is usually the biggest saving. Always check your rabbits’ diet and portion sizes with a vet, as individual needs vary.
1

Start With Hay

Hay is the foundation of a rabbit’s diet and usually the largest food cost. Divide the bag price by its weight to find your cost per kilogram.

2

Measure Pellets

Pellets are a small, measured portion each day. Follow the pack guidance and your vet’s advice, then enter the grams you actually feed.

3

Add Fresh Greens

Estimate your weekly spend on leafy greens and herbs for each rabbit. Seasonal produce and home-grown herbs keep this cost down.

4

Plan for Extras

Treats and bedding add up over a year. Include them for a full picture, and budget separately for vet care and insurance.

Rabbit Food Cost FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the cost of feeding pet rabbits.

Costs vary with the brand of hay and pellets you buy and how much fresh food you give. As an illustration, a rabbit eating 150g of hay, 30g of pellets and about £3 of fresh greens a week can cost roughly £35 a month to feed. Enter your own prices in the calculator for a personalised figure.

Hay or grass should make up the large majority of a rabbit’s diet, commonly given as around 80 to 85 percent. Rabbits need constant access to fresh hay to wear down their teeth and keep their digestion moving.

Pellets are a small part of a healthy diet, not the main food. Feed a measured daily portion of a good-quality, high-fibre pellet according to the guidance on the pack and your vet’s advice, and avoid muesli-style mixes that encourage selective feeding.

Buy hay in larger bales or bulk boxes, which usually costs less per kilogram, and store it somewhere dry and well ventilated. Choose seasonal leafy greens, grow your own herbs, and avoid expensive treats, which rabbits do not need.

No. The calculator covers food, with an optional field for bedding and litter. Vaccinations, neutering, insurance, vet care and housing are separate costs, so budget for them in addition to your feeding costs.
