While an aquarium heater is plugged in 24/7, it does not draw power continuously. It cycles on and off to maintain the set temperature. Depending on the room temperature and tank insulation, a heater typically runs for 8 to 12 hours a day (a 30-50% duty cycle).
In most freshwater setups, the heater is the largest consumer of electricity. In reef or heavily planted tanks, high-intensity LED or T5 lighting, along with protein skimmers and return pumps, often become the primary drivers of energy consumption.
