1

The Primary Course

Most puppies have two injections 2 to 4 weeks apart, starting from around 8 weeks old. Some vets use three, so enter the number your practice has quoted.

2

Consultation Fees

Each visit usually includes a health check. Some practices add this as a separate fee, others include it in the injection price, so check your quote.

3

Optional Extras

Kennel cough is the common add-on, and many boarding kennels and daycare centres ask for it. Rabies is only needed if you plan to travel abroad.

4

Boosters for Life

The first booster is due at about 12 months. After that, your vet will advise which vaccines are needed every year and which can be given less often.

Puppy Vaccination FAQ

Answers to the questions new puppy owners ask most often.

Most puppies in the UK have two injections 2 to 4 weeks apart, with the first from around 8 weeks old. Some vets use a three-dose course. A booster follows at around 12 months, then regularly as your vet advises.

The core puppy vaccine protects against canine distemper, parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis (adenovirus) and leptospirosis, and often parainfluenza. Kennel cough and rabies are separate, optional vaccines that depend on your puppy’s lifestyle and travel plans.

Puppies are usually considered protected around one to two weeks after their final primary injection. Your vet will give you a date and can advise on safe socialisation before then.

Standard pet insurance usually does not cover routine vaccinations because they are preventive care rather than treatment. Some vet practices offer monthly health plans that spread the cost of vaccinations and other routine care.

If a booster is late, immunity may fall, and for some vaccines your dog may need a restart course of two injections. Contact your vet as soon as you realise, and they will advise whether one dose or a full course is needed.
