Average Equipment Wattage

Typical power consumption ranges for common aquarium equipment. Actual wattage varies by brand, tank size, and specific model. Always check the label on your device.

Equipment Type Average Wattage Typical Daily Usage Notes
Submersible Heater50W – 300W8 – 12 hoursCycles on/off based on ambient room temperature.
Hang-On-Back Filter5W – 20W24 hoursRuns continuously for biological filtration.
Canister Filter10W – 50W24 hoursHigher flow rates require more wattage.
LED Aquarium Light10W – 100W+6 – 10 hoursReef/planted tanks use significantly more power.
Air Pump2W – 10W24 hoursVery low energy consumption overall.
Protein Skimmer (Reef)15W – 60W24 hoursEssential for saltwater setups, runs continuously.

Aquarium Cost Calculator FAQ

Everything fish keepers ask about electricity usage, heaters, and reducing tank running costs.

The cost to run an average 60-litre (15-gallon) freshwater aquarium is typically between £3 and £8 per month, depending on equipment wattage, room temperature, and local electricity rates. Larger reef tanks with high-intensity lighting and heavy filtration can cost £20 to £50+ per month.

While an aquarium heater is plugged in 24/7, it does not draw power continuously. It cycles on and off to maintain the set temperature. Depending on the room temperature and tank insulation, a heater typically runs for 8 to 12 hours a day (a 30-50% duty cycle).

In most freshwater setups, the heater is the largest consumer of electricity. In reef or heavily planted tanks, high-intensity LED or T5 lighting, along with protein skimmers and return pumps, often become the primary drivers of energy consumption.

You can reduce costs by using energy-efficient LED lighting, ensuring your heater is appropriately sized (not oversized), adding a tight-fitting tank lid to reduce heat evaporation, keeping the tank away from cold drafts, and using a timer for lights and CO2 systems.

Check the label on each piece of equipment (heater, filter, light, pump) for its wattage (W). Add these numbers together for your total maximum wattage. For a more accurate running cost, multiply each device’s wattage by the number of hours it runs per day, sum them up, and divide by 1000 to get daily kWh.
