Foreign Income Tax FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK taxation on overseas earnings and double taxation relief.
If you are a UK resident, you generally have to pay UK tax on your worldwide income, including foreign earnings. However, you may be eligible for Double Taxation Relief if you have already paid tax on that income in another country.
Double Taxation Relief prevents you from being taxed twice on the same income. If you pay tax on foreign income in another country, you can usually claim a credit against your UK tax bill for the foreign tax paid, up to the amount of UK tax due on that specific income.
Your Personal Allowance (£12,570 for 2024/25) is based on your total worldwide income. If your total income exceeds £100,000, your Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 earned over this threshold, potentially reaching zero at £125,140.
UK residents who are not domiciled in the UK can sometimes choose to be taxed on the ‘remittance basis’. This means you only pay UK tax on foreign income and gains when you bring (remit) them to the UK, though this may result in losing your Personal Allowance and paying an annual charge after long-term residency.
