Navigating Personal Independence Payment

The PIP claims process can feel overwhelming. Whether you are applying for the first time or preparing for a review, understanding these four core areas is crucial for a successful claim.

1

What is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment is a tax-free benefit for people aged 16 to State Pension age who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability. It is designed to help with the extra costs of living with ill health.

2

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must have had difficulties with daily living or getting around (or both) for 3 months, and expect these difficulties to continue for at least 9 months. You must also be habitually resident in the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands.

3

The Two Components

PIP is divided into two parts: the Daily Living Component (for help with tasks like preparing food, washing, and managing medication) and the Mobility Component (for help with planning journeys or moving around). Each has a Standard and Enhanced rate.

4

The Assessment Process

After initiating a claim, you will complete a ‘How your disability affects you’ (PIP2) form. The DWP may then arrange a consultation with an independent healthcare professional who will evaluate your condition against a specific points-based descriptor system.

💡 Pro Tip: When filling out your PIP2 form, focus on how your condition affects you on your worst days, not your best days. Be specific about the help you need, even if a friend or family member currently provides it for you.
Not Means-Tested: Your income, savings, or employment status do not affect your eligibility. You can work full-time and still claim PIP.
Tax-Free: PIP payments are entirely free of income tax and do not count as income for tax credit or Universal Credit calculations.
Payment Cycle: PIP is typically paid every 4 weeks directly into your bank, building society, or credit union account.
Passport Benefits: Receiving the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component can qualify you for a Blue Badge, vehicle tax exemption, and access to the Motability scheme.
⚠️ Time Limit: If you disagree with a PIP decision, you only have one calendar month from the date on your decision letter to request a Mandatory Reconsideration.

Understanding the Points System

The DWP uses a points-based system across 12 specific activities to determine your level of need and the corresponding rate of support.

Component Activities Assessed Standard Rate Threshold Enhanced Rate Threshold
Daily Living Preparing food, eating/drinking, managing therapy, washing/bathing, managing toilet needs, dressing/undressing, communicating verbally, reading, engaging with people, and making budgeting decisions. 8 to 11 points 12 points or more
Mobility Planning and following a journey (mental/cognitive support), and moving around (physical ability to walk more than 20, 50, or 200 metres). 8 to 11 points 12 points or more
ℹ️ Note: You can be awarded one component at the Standard rate and the other at the Enhanced rate, or both at the same rate. The assessment is entirely based on the points you score in each category.

PIP Benefits FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about claiming and managing Personal Independence Payment in the UK.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) replaced Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for people aged 16 to State Pension age. PIP focuses on how your condition affects your ability to carry out specific daily living and mobility activities, rather than the condition itself, and uses a points-based assessment system.

The PIP assessment uses a points-based system across 12 activities (8 for daily living, 4 for mobility). Each activity has descriptors with assigned points based on the level of help you need. Scoring 8–11 points qualifies you for the Standard Rate, while 12 or more points qualifies you for the Enhanced Rate for that component.

Yes. PIP is not means-tested and is not affected by your income, savings, or employment status. You can work full-time or part-time and still be eligible for PIP, provided you meet the disability and residence criteria.

If your claim is rejected or you disagree with the awarded points, you have the right to request a ‘Mandatory Reconsideration’ from the DWP within one month of the decision. If you are still unsuccessful, you can appeal to an independent tribunal.
