Common Discount Multipliers

Quick mental math multipliers to calculate common sale percentages without a calculator.

Discount Multiplier Example on £100
10% Off× 0.90£90.00
15% Off× 0.85£85.00
20% Off× 0.80£80.00
25% Off× 0.75£75.00
33% Off× 0.67£67.00
50% Off× 0.50£50.00
⚠️ Important Note: Successive discounts (e.g., “20% off, then an extra 10% off”) are not additive. You must apply the second discount to the already-reduced price, not the original price.

Discount Calculation FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating percentages, sale prices, and VAT removal.

To calculate a percentage discount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal), then subtract that amount from the original price. For example, 20% off £50 is £50 × 0.20 = £10 discount. The final price is £50 – £10 = £40.

Yes. To remove the standard 20% UK VAT from a gross price, you can enter the gross price and apply a 16.67% discount (which is mathematically equivalent to dividing by 1.2). Alternatively, simply divide the gross price by 1.2 manually.

Successive discounts are not additive. For example, 20% off followed by 10% off is not 30% off. You must apply the first discount to the original price, then apply the second discount to the new, reduced price. Our calculator can help you compute the first step instantly.
