Chinese Zodiac FAQ
Learn more about the lunar calendar, the 5 elements, and how Chinese astrology differs from Western traditions.
The Chinese Zodiac operates on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by an animal. The cycle begins with the Rat and ends with the Pig. The zodiac year traditionally starts on the Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20, rather than January 1st.
The 5 elements (Wu Xing) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element lasts for two consecutive years (one Yin, one Yang) before the cycle repeats, creating a 60-year full cycle when combined with the 12 animals.
Because the Chinese Zodiac year follows the lunar calendar, it typically begins in late January or early February. If you were born in January or early February, your zodiac animal might actually belong to the previous lunar year. This calculator provides a warning if your birthday falls in this cusp period.
The Western Zodiac is based on the solar calendar and the position of the sun relative to constellations at the time of your birth, changing monthly. The Chinese Zodiac is based on the lunar calendar, operates on a 12-year cycle, and assigns an animal to each entire year.
In Chinese astrology, compatibility is determined by the relationships between the 12 animals. Generally, animals that are 4 years apart (forming a trine) are highly compatible, sharing similar core values and temperaments, while animals directly opposite each other in the 12-year cycle (6 years apart) are considered conflicting.
