Marine Navigation FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating sailing distances, nautical units, and voyage planning for your time on the water.

Sailing distance is calculated using the basic physics formula: Distance = Speed × Time. By multiplying your average speed (in knots, km/h, or mph) by the duration of your voyage (in hours), you can determine the total distance traveled. This calculator automatically handles unit conversions for nautical miles, kilometers, and statute miles.

A nautical mile (NM) is a unit of measurement used primarily in maritime and aviation navigation. It is based on the circumference of the Earth and is defined as exactly 1,852 meters (about 1.15078 statute miles). One nautical mile corresponds to one minute of latitude, making it highly practical for chart navigation.

One knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour. To convert knots to kilometers per hour (km/h), multiply by 1.852. To convert knots to miles per hour (mph), multiply by 1.15078. For example, 10 knots is approximately 18.52 km/h or 11.51 mph.

A nautical mile is longer than a statute mile (the standard mile used on land). One nautical mile equals 1.15078 statute miles, or exactly 1,852 meters. Statute miles are based on Roman measurements (5,280 feet), while nautical miles are tied to the Earth’s geographic coordinates.

While the calculator provides the theoretical distance based on speed and time, actual sailing distance can be impacted by environmental factors. Tailwinds and favorable currents can increase your speed over ground, while headwinds, tides, and rough seas can slow you down, meaning you might travel less distance in the same amount of time.

Fuel consumption depends on your vessel’s engine efficiency, hull design, and speed. Generally, fuel usage increases exponentially with speed. To estimate, multiply your engine’s fuel burn rate (e.g., liters per hour) by the total voyage time in hours. Always add a 20% safety margin for unexpected delays or detours.
