1

The XP Formula

OSRS uses an exponential curve. The XP required for a level is the sum of `floor(i + 300 * 2^(i/7))` for all previous levels. This makes levels 70–85 significantly faster than 85–99.

2

Virtual Levels

While 99 is the traditional maximum, the game tracks experience up to level 126 (200 million XP). Many players use “virtual levels” to track progress beyond 99.

3

XP Lamps & Books

Don’t forget to factor in XP lamps, books of knowledge, and quest rewards, which can significantly reduce the number of repetitive actions required.

4

Efficiency vs. Cost

Higher XP/hour methods often cost more gold. Use this calculator to balance your available budget with your desired time-to-level goal.

OSRS XP FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about experience calculation, skilling, and leveling in Old School RuneScape.

OSRS uses a specific mathematical formula where the XP required for a level is the sum of `floor(i + 300 * 2^(i/7))` for all levels `i` from 1 to your target level minus 1. This creates an exponential curve, making higher levels progressively harder to achieve. Level 99 requires exactly 13,034,431 XP.

The standard maximum level for most skills in Old School RuneScape is 99. However, the game continues to track experience up to 200 million XP, which corresponds to virtual level 126. Some players use “virtual levels” to track their progress beyond the traditional level 99 cap.

To calculate XP per hour, multiply the XP gained per action by the number of actions you can perform in one hour. For example, if an action gives 50 XP and you can perform it 1,200 times per hour, your XP rate is 60,000 XP/hour. This calculator can estimate your total time if you provide this rate.

This calculator provides the raw XP and actions needed between two levels. To account for XP lamps, books of knowledge, or quest rewards, you can manually subtract their XP value from the “Total XP Needed” result to find your true remaining grind.

Due to the exponential nature of the OSRS experience formula, the second half of level 99 (from level 92 to 99) requires exactly 6,517,178 XP. This is precisely 50% of the total 13,034,431 XP needed to reach level 99 from level 1, making the final stretch the most time-consuming part of any skill.
