How Train Driver Pay Is Calculated

A train driver’s take-home pay starts with basic salary, adds anything extra you earn, then subtracts tax, National Insurance and your other deductions.

Take-home pay formula

Take-Home = (Basic + Overtime + Allowances) − Tax − NI − Pension − Student Loan

Overtime is worked out from your basic hourly rate, which is your basic salary divided by contracted hours across 52 weeks, multiplied by your overtime rate and the extra hours you work.

Example: A driver on £55,000 in England for 2026/27 pays about £9,432 income tax and £3,111 National Insurance. That leaves roughly £42,457 a year or £3,538 a month before any pension or student loan.

What affects a train driver’s salary?

  • Experience: trainees earn a lower training salary for around 12 to 15 months, then pay steps up once you qualify.
  • Employer: passenger operators, freight companies and the Underground each run their own pay agreements.
  • Overtime and rest-day working: extra shifts can add thousands to annual earnings.
  • Unsocial hours: night, weekend and bank holiday work may attract allowances or premiums.
  • Pension and deductions: your pension percentage and student loan plan change what you actually take home.
