Water Meter FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about reading water meters, calculating usage, and reducing water bills.

Most UK water meters display numbers in black and red. The black numbers represent cubic metres (m³), which is what your water company uses to bill you. The red numbers (or dials) represent litres. To take a reading, simply write down the black numbers from left to right, ignoring the red numbers entirely.

If you are on a metered tariff, your bill is calculated by subtracting your previous meter reading from your current reading to find the total cubic metres (m³) used. This number is then multiplied by your water company’s rate per m³, plus any fixed annual standing charges.

The average person in the UK uses approximately 142 litres of water per day. This includes drinking, cooking, washing, cleaning, and flushing the toilet. A typical two-person household uses around 284 litres (0.284 m³) per day.

There are exactly 1,000 litres in one cubic metre (1 m³) of water. Water companies bill based on cubic metres, so if your meter shows you have used 5 m³ over a billing period, you have used 5,000 litres of water.
