Resolution: Always design your cover at a minimum of 300 DPI to prevent pixelation during printing.
Colour Profile: Use the CMYK colour profile, not RGB, to ensure printed colours match your screen design.
Barcode Zone: Leave the bottom 2″ x 1.2″ of the back cover free of critical text or design elements.
Spine Text: KDP requires a minimum of 80 pages to include text on the spine. Below 80 pages, the spine will be blank.
File Format: Export your final cover as a high-quality PDF or JPEG, ensuring all fonts are embedded or outlined.
💡 Pro Tip: Always download the official KDP Cover Template Generator PDF for your specific trim size and page count. Use it as a background layer in Canva, Photoshop, or Affinity to perfectly align your design.

How KDP Dimensions Work

Understanding the math behind your book cover ensures a professional, print-ready file that Amazon won’t reject.

1

Calculate the Spine Width

The spine width depends entirely on page count and paper type. White paper uses a multiplier of 0.002252″ per page, while thicker cream paper uses 0.0025″ per page.

2

Determine Total Cover Width

The full flat cover width is the sum of the Back Cover Width + Spine Width + Front Cover Width. For a 6″ wide book, the base width is (6″ + Spine + 6″).

3

Apply Bleed Margins

If your cover has background colours or images that extend to the edge, you must add a 0.125″ (3.2 mm) bleed to the top, bottom, and outside edge of the cover.

4

Verify Against KDP Templates

While this calculator provides highly accurate estimates, always cross-reference your final dimensions with the official KDP Cover Template Generator before finalising your design.

⚠️ Important Note: This calculator provides an estimate based on standard KDP formulas. Amazon may update their printing specifications. Always verify your final cover file using the official KDP Cover Template Generator before uploading.

KDP Cover FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Amazon KDP book cover formatting.

KDP spine width is calculated by multiplying the total page count by a specific factor based on the paper type. For white paper, the multiplier is 0.002252 inches per page. For cream paper, the multiplier is 0.0025 inches per page.

Bleed is the extra area around the edges of your cover that gets trimmed off during printing. KDP requires a 0.125-inch (3.2 mm) bleed on the top, bottom, and outside edge of your cover to ensure no white borders appear after trimming.

The minimum page count for an Amazon KDP paperback is 24 pages. Books with fewer than 24 pages cannot be printed as paperbacks through the standard KDP platform.

The calculator provides the total canvas dimensions. KDP automatically reserves a 2-inch by 1.2-inch area on the bottom right of the back cover for the barcode. You should avoid placing critical text or design elements in this zone.
