Stock Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating stock trade profit and return.

Subtract your total buying cost, including fees, from your total selling proceeds, after fees. If you sold 100 shares bought at £10 and sold at £12, with £10 total fees, your profit would be (£12 × 100) − (£10 × 100) − £10 = £190.

The break-even price is the price per share at which your sale proceeds exactly cover your original purchase cost and all fees, resulting in neither a profit nor a loss. It is calculated by dividing your total cost, including fees, by the number of shares.

Yes, dividends received while holding a stock add to your total return alongside any capital gain from the share price increasing. Many investors calculate ‘total return’ by combining capital gains and dividend income together.

Broker fees are usually charged as either a flat fee per trade or a percentage of the trade value, and are typically applied on both the buy and the sell side. These fees reduce your net profit and should always be included when working out your real return.
