Electric Car Tax FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating and interpreting company car tax for electric vehicles in the UK.

Electric car BiK tax is calculated by multiplying the car’s P11D value (list price including VAT and delivery, minus first-year registration fee) by the official BiK percentage for that tax year. This gives the ‘taxable value’, which is then multiplied by your marginal Income Tax rate (20%, 40%, or 45%).

For the 2026/2027 tax year, the Benefit in Kind (BiK) rate for zero-emission electric vehicles is 4%. This is scheduled to rise to 5% in 2027/2028, remaining significantly lower than petrol or diesel alternatives.

Yes. While electric cars were previously exempt, from April 2025 onwards, zero-emission vehicles are subject to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). The standard rate applies (currently £195 per year), and the Expensive Car Supplement (£390 extra per year for years 2-6) applies if the P11D value exceeds £40,000.

The P11D value is the manufacturer’s list price of the vehicle, including VAT, delivery charges, and any factory-fitted accessories. It explicitly excludes the first-year vehicle registration fee (VED) and number plates.
