Dental Costs FAQ
Everything you need to know about dental treatment costs, NHS bands, and exemptions in the UK.
NHS dental treatment in England is divided into three bands: Band 1 (£26.80) covers examinations, diagnosis, and preventive care. Band 2 (£73.50) includes everything in Band 1 plus fillings, root canals, and extractions. Band 3 (£319.10) covers everything in Bands 1 and 2 plus crowns, dentures, and bridges.
You are exempt from NHS dental charges if you are under 18 (or under 19 and in full-time education), pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, or if you receive certain qualifying benefits such as Income Support, Universal Credit (with specific earnings thresholds), or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.
A private dental examination in the UK typically costs between £40 and £80, depending on the location of the practice and whether x-rays or a hygiene session are included. London and the South East tend to be at the higher end of this range.
For NHS dentistry, you pay a single charge for your entire ‘course of treatment’, regardless of how many visits it takes to complete. If you need a different type of treatment later, a new course and charge may apply. Private dentists may charge per visit or per specific item of work.
