*Estimates are based on average UK water company rates for 2025/2026. Actual bills vary by region (e.g., Thames Water, Scottish Water, Severn Trent).
💡 Pro Tip: If you are currently unmetered, you can usually request a free water meter installation from your water company. You typically have 24 months to switch back to unmetered charges if you find the metered bill is higher.
1

Metered Charges

You pay a fixed annual ‘standing charge’ plus a volumetric rate for every cubic metre (m³) of water you consume.

2

Unmetered Charges

Based on the historical ‘rateable value’ of your property, or an assessed charge determined by the number of bedrooms.

3

Sewerage Costs

Most households pay for wastewater removal and treatment. This is often calculated similarly to water supply, based on volume or property size.

4

Regional Variations

Water is a regional monopoly in the UK. Prices vary significantly depending on whether you are served by Thames Water, United Utilities, Scottish Water, etc.

Water Bill FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK water billing, metering, and reducing your household water costs.

If you have a water meter, your bill is calculated using a fixed annual standing charge plus a volumetric rate based on the cubic metres (m³) of water you use. If you are unmetered, your bill is based on the historical rateable value of your property or an assessed charge based on the number of bedrooms.

Water supply charges cover the cost of treating and delivering clean water to your property. Sewerage (or wastewater) charges cover the cost of removing and treating the wastewater that goes down your drains and toilets. Most households are billed for both by the same regional water company.

For many households, especially those with fewer occupants than bedrooms or low water usage, a water meter is cheaper. However, large families in small properties might find unmetered assessed charges more economical. You can usually ask your water company for a free meter and switch back within 24 months if it’s not cheaper.

You can reduce your bill by fixing leaking toilets and taps, installing water-efficient showerheads, running dishwashers and washing machines only when full, and checking if your water company offers a ‘WaterSure’ tariff if you have a medical condition or a large family.
