Degree Classification FAQ

Everything you need to know about how UK degree classifications are worked out.

Most UK universities calculate a weighted average mark across Year 2 and Year 3 (and sometimes Year 1), then classify the result into bands: First (70%+), Upper Second/2:1 (60–69%), Lower Second/2:2 (50–59%), Third (40–49%), or Fail (below 40%).

At most UK universities, Year 1 does not count towards your final classification, though you usually need to pass it to progress. Some universities do include a small weighting for Year 1, so it’s worth checking your specific course handbook.

Weighting varies by institution. Common schemes include 1:2 (Year 2 counts a third, Year 3 counts two-thirds), 1:3, or 20:80. Always confirm the exact weighting used by your university, as it can meaningfully affect your final classification.

A borderline classification is when your weighted average falls just below a boundary, often within 1–2%. Many universities have discretionary rules that can round a borderline mark up, especially if a majority of your final-year credits reach the higher band.
