How Vehicle Tax Works
Understanding UK Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)
First Year Rate
For cars registered after April 2017, the first year of tax is based entirely on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. Electric cars currently pay £0.
Standard Rate
From year 2 onwards, most petrol and diesel cars pay a flat standard rate. Alternative fuel vehicles receive a small £10 discount.
Expensive Car Supplement
Vehicles with a manufacturer’s list price over £40,000 incur an additional annual charge for years 2 to 6, regardless of their CO2 emissions.
Pre-2017 Vehicles
Cars registered before 1 April 2017 remain on the older CO2-based tax system, where the annual rate is determined solely by emissions.

Vehicle Tax FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), electric vehicles, and tax bands.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is calculated based on the vehicle’s fuel type, CO2 emissions, and the date it was first registered. Cars registered after 1 April 2017 pay a first-year rate based on CO2, followed by a standard annual rate. An expensive car supplement applies to vehicles with a list price over £40,000.
Currently, fully electric vehicles (0g/km CO2) are exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). However, from April 2025, electric vehicles will begin to pay a standard annual rate, with a first-year rate based on their list price, aligning them more closely with alternative fuel vehicles.
If your car had a list price of more than £40,000 when it was new, you must pay an Expensive Car Supplement of £390 per year (or £380 for alternative fuel vehicles) for years 2 to 6 of the vehicle’s life, on top of the standard VED rate.
While diesel cars pay the same standard VED rates as petrol cars, they do not benefit from the £10 discount offered to ‘Alternative Fuel’ vehicles. Additionally, older diesel cars that do not meet Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards may face higher first-year rates.
