Apprenticeship Wage FAQ

Everything you need to know about apprentice pay, taxes, and entitlements in the UK.

As of the 2024/2025 tax year, the apprenticeship minimum wage is £6.40 per hour for apprentices under 19, or those aged 19 and over in their first year. From the second year onwards, apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage appropriate for their age (£8.60 for 19-20 year olds, and £11.44 for those 21 and over).

You only pay Income Tax if your gross annual earnings exceed the Personal Allowance, which is currently £12,570 per year. Many apprentices earn below this threshold and therefore do not pay Income Tax. However, National Insurance contributions may still apply if you earn over £242 per week.

Once you complete your first year of apprenticeship, or if you turn 19 during your apprenticeship (and have already completed the first year), you are legally entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage appropriate for your age. This is significantly higher than the apprentice rate.

Yes, absolutely. The apprenticeship minimum wage is just the legal floor. Many forward-thinking employers choose to pay their apprentices a higher, more competitive wage to attract top talent, reward hard work, and reflect the true value of the contributions being made.
