The Motability Scheme is a UK charity programme that allows disabled people to lease a brand-new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter, or powered wheelchair in exchange for all or part of their qualifying mobility allowance.
You are eligible if you receive one of the following: the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, the Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA, the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS), or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), and you have at least 12 months remaining on your award.
A Motability lease is fully inclusive. It covers comprehensive insurance for up to three named drivers, full RAC breakdown cover, servicing and maintenance, full tyre replacement, and windscreen repair or replacement. Most adaptations are also included at no extra cost.
Yes. If you travel as a passenger in a wheelchair, you can choose a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). The scheme offers a wide range of WAVs, and many adaptations required for wheelchair access are funded entirely by the scheme.
Yes. You can nominate up to three drivers to drive the vehicle on your behalf. The primary applicant does not need to be the driver, but the vehicle must be used for the benefit of the disabled person.
