Running Pace FAQ
Everything you need to know about calculating running pace, speed, and race times.
To calculate your running pace, divide your total running time by the distance covered. For example, if you run 5 kilometres in 25 minutes, your pace is 25 ÷ 5 = 5 minutes per kilometre (5:00 min/km). For pace per mile, convert the distance to miles first (5km = 3.107 miles), then divide: 25 ÷ 3.107 = 8:02 min/mile. This calculator does all the conversions for you automatically.
A good 5K pace depends on your experience and fitness level. Beginner runners typically complete a 5K in 25-35 minutes (pace of 5:00-7:00 min/km or 8:02-11:16 min/mile). Intermediate runners aim for 20-25 minutes (4:00-5:00 min/km or 6:26-8:02 min/mile). Advanced runners target 17-20 minutes (3:24-4:00 min/km or 5:29-6:26 min/mile). Elite runners can complete a 5K in under 15 minutes (sub-3:00 min/km or sub-4:50 min/mile).
To convert from min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.60934 (since 1 mile = 1.60934 km). For example, 5:00 min/km × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile. To convert from min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.60934. For example, 8:00 min/mile ÷ 1.60934 = 4:58 min/km. This calculator handles all conversions automatically — just select your preferred unit.
A good marathon pace depends on your fitness and goals. Beginner marathoners typically run at 6:00-7:00 min/km (9:39-11:16 min/mile) for a finish time of 4:13-4:55. Intermediate runners target 5:00-5:30 min/km (8:02-8:51 min/mile) for a 3:30-3:52 finish. Advanced runners aim for 4:00-4:30 min/km (6:26-7:15 min/mile) for a sub-3:15 finish. Elite marathoners run under 3:00 min/km (sub-4:50 min/mile).
Race time predictions are based on the principle that longer races are run at slower paces. A common rule of thumb is that for each doubling of distance, your pace slows by about 5-10%. For example, if your 5K pace is 5:00 min/km, your 10K pace might be around 5:15-5:25 min/km, half marathon around 5:30-5:45 min/km, and marathon around 5:45-6:15 min/km. Use the race predictor section of this calculator for more precise estimates based on established formulas.
Pace measures how long it takes to cover a unit of distance (minutes per kilometre or mile), while speed measures how much distance is covered per unit of time (km/h or mph). They are inversely related: Pace = 60 ÷ Speed (in km/h), and Speed = 60 ÷ Pace (in min/km). For example, a pace of 5:00 min/km equals a speed of 12 km/h. Runners typically use pace, while cyclists use speed.
Running pace calculators are mathematically exact — they simply perform the conversions and calculations based on the values you enter. However, real-world running pace can vary due to terrain, weather, elevation, wind, and fatigue. GPS watches may also have small errors (typically ±1-3%). Use this calculator as a reliable reference, but allow for real-world variations when planning races and training.
A good 10K time depends on your experience level. Beginners typically finish in 50-60 minutes (pace of 5:00-6:00 min/km or 8:02-9:39 min/mile). Intermediate runners target 40-50 minutes (4:00-5:00 min/km or 6:26-8:02 min/mile). Advanced runners aim for 35-40 minutes (3:30-4:00 min/km or 5:38-6:26 min/mile). Elite runners complete a 10K in under 30 minutes (sub-3:00 min/km or sub-4:50 min/mile).
