Audiobook Speed FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating listening time at different playback speeds.

Divide the original audiobook duration by your playback speed multiplier. Formula: Adjusted Time = Original Time ÷ Speed. For example, a 10-hour audiobook at 1.5× speed takes 10 ÷ 1.5 = 6 hours 40 minutes. To find time saved: Time Saved = Original Time − Adjusted Time.

At 2× speed you listen to any audiobook in exactly half the original time. So a 10-hour book takes 5 hours, saving you 5 hours. A 20-hour book at 2× takes 10 hours — saving an entire 10-hour block of time.

Most new listeners find 1.25×–1.5× comfortable. Experienced listeners often settle at 1.75×–2× for non-fiction, self-help, or business books. Literary fiction, poetry, or books with complex accents and multiple narrators tend to work best at 1.0×–1.25×. Start lower and increase gradually — your brain adapts within a few sessions.

Research generally shows that comprehension stays largely intact up to about 1.5× for most listeners. Above 2× speed, comprehension can begin to fall off — especially for dense, complex, or unfamiliar material. For familiar topics, many listeners report good retention at 2.5× or even 3×. Your personal sweet spot depends on your familiarity with the subject and the narrator’s pace at normal speed.

Yes — the same formula applies to any audio content. Enter the podcast episode’s runtime as the original duration, select your playback speed, and the calculator returns your adjusted listening time and time saved. It works identically for lectures, radio programmes, or any recorded audio.

Most major apps support a range of speeds. Audible allows 0.5× to 3.5× in 0.05× increments. Apple Books goes from 0.5× to 2× in 0.05× steps. Libby (OverDrive) supports 0.75× to 3×. Spotify and Google Play Books support up to 3× and 2× respectively. This calculator works with any speed your app supports.

The total runtime is usually shown on the product page of Audible, Apple Books, Libro.fm, or your library app. In Audible it appears below the cover image. In Apple Books it shows in the book details panel. Your audio player app typically shows total duration in the playback screen itself.

The average audiobook is around 10–11 hours long. At 2× speed that becomes roughly 5–5.5 hours per book. If you listen for 30 minutes a day, that’s about 180 hours per year of listening time — enough for roughly 32–36 audiobooks at 2× speed, compared to 16–18 at normal speed.
