Reverse VAT FAQ

Everything you need to know about removing VAT from a price and calculating net amounts.

To remove VAT from a gross price, divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate). For example, to remove 20% VAT from £120: Net Price = £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100. The VAT amount is then £120 − £100 = £20. This is the correct method — never simply subtract 20% from the gross price.

The reverse VAT formula is: Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + VAT Rate). For UK 20% VAT: Net Price = Gross Price ÷ 1.20. The VAT amount is calculated as: VAT = Gross Price − Net Price. Alternatively, you can multiply the gross price by (VAT Rate ÷ (100 + VAT Rate)) to get the VAT directly.

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. There is also a reduced rate of 5% (for domestic fuel, children’s car seats, mobility aids for the elderly, and some energy-saving materials) and a zero rate of 0% (for most food, children’s clothes, books, newspapers, and public transport). This calculator supports all three rates.

To calculate VAT backwards from a gross price, divide by (1 + VAT rate). For a £240 price with 20% VAT: Net = £240 ÷ 1.20 = £200, VAT = £240 − £200 = £40. A common mistake is to simply subtract 20% from £240 (which gives £192 — incorrect). The VAT is always a percentage of the net price, not the gross price.

The net price is the price of a product or service before VAT is added — this is what the business actually earns. The gross price (also called the VAT-inclusive price) is the final price the customer pays, which includes VAT. The relationship is: Gross Price = Net Price + VAT Amount. In the UK and EU, retail prices displayed to consumers must be VAT-inclusive by law.

Yes. This calculator supports any VAT rate. You can select from preset EU rates such as 21% (Ireland, Spain, Netherlands), 19% (Germany), 22% (Italy), 25% (Sweden, Denmark, Norway), or 27% (Hungary). You can also enter a custom rate for any country or situation.

Because VAT is calculated on the net price, not the gross price. If a £100 item has 20% VAT added, the gross is £120. But subtracting 20% from £120 gives £96, not £100. This is because 20% of £120 (£24) is more than 20% of £100 (£20). You must divide by 1.20 to get the correct net price of £100. This is the most common VAT calculation mistake.

A VAT-inclusive price (also called gross price) is the total price a consumer pays, which already has VAT added to the net price. In the UK and EU, retail prices displayed to consumers must be VAT-inclusive by law. B2B prices are often shown VAT-exclusive (net), with VAT added at checkout. This calculator helps you convert between both formats.

To find the VAT amount from a gross price: first calculate the net price (Gross ÷ 1.20 for 20% VAT), then subtract: VAT = Gross − Net. For example, on a £120 gross price: Net = £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100, VAT = £120 − £100 = £20. Alternatively, VAT = Gross × (20/120) = Gross × 0.1667.

The VAT fraction is a shortcut used in the UK to extract VAT from a gross price. For 20% VAT, the fraction is 20/120 = 1/6. So VAT = Gross Price × 1/6. For a £120 price: VAT = £120 × 1/6 = £20. This works because VAT is 20 parts of a total 120 parts (100 net + 20 VAT). The fraction changes with the rate: for 5% VAT it’s 5/105 = 1/21.
