Common Frequency Units

Standard SI prefixes for scaling Hertz (Hz) across different magnitudes in physics, electronics, and telecommunications.

Unit Name Symbol Equivalent in Hertz (Hz) Common Use Case
HertzHz1 HzStandard SI unit, human hearing range
KilohertzkHz1,000 HzAudio signals, AM radio
MegahertzMHz1,000,000 HzFM radio, computer processors
GigahertzGHz1,000,000,000 HzWi-Fi, 5G networks, modern CPUs
⚠️ Important Note: This calculator assumes classical wave mechanics. For electromagnetic waves in a vacuum, the wave speed is exactly 299,792,458 m/s. In other mediums (like water or glass), the speed and resulting wavelength will be lower.

Frequency & Waves FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about frequency, period, and wave mechanics in physics.

Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. It is measured in Hertz (Hz), where 1 Hz equals one cycle per second. It is the reciprocal of the period (T), expressed as f = 1/T.

Frequency (f) is calculated by taking the reciprocal of the period (T). The formula is f = 1 / T. For example, if a wave has a period of 0.02 seconds, its frequency is 1 / 0.02 = 50 Hz.

Angular frequency (ω) is a measure of rotation rate, expressed in radians per second (rad/s). It is related to standard frequency (f) by the formula ω = 2πf. It is commonly used in physics and engineering to describe oscillating systems.

Wavelength (λ) is directly proportional to wave speed (v) and inversely proportional to frequency (f), according to the formula λ = v / f. If the frequency remains constant, a higher wave speed results in a longer wavelength.
