GST Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know before calculating GST on your invoices in 2026.
To add GST, multiply the base amount by the GST rate and add it to the original amount: GST Amount = Base Amount × (Rate ÷ 100), and Total = Base Amount + GST Amount. For example, on ₹1,000 at 18% GST, the GST amount is ₹180 and the total payable is ₹1,180.
To find the original amount before GST, divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100): Base Amount = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). The GST amount is then simply Total minus Base Amount. For example, a total of ₹1,180 at 18% GST has a base amount of ₹1,000 and a GST component of ₹180.
For sales within the same state, GST is split equally between CGST (collected by the central government) and SGST (collected by the state government), each at half the total GST rate. For sales between different states, the full rate is charged as IGST (Integrated GST), collected by the central government and later apportioned to the destination state.
India uses multiple GST slabs depending on the goods or service: 0% for exempt essentials, 5% for basic necessities, 12% and 18% for standard goods and most services, and 28% for luxury and sin goods. Some items also attract an additional GST compensation cess on top of the 28% slab.
GST is calculated on the taxable value, which is the price after deducting any trade discount shown on the invoice, but before adding other charges like packing or transport unless those are billed separately. Discounts given after the sale via credit notes do not usually reduce the taxable value used for GST already charged.
