Exam Mark FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating your final exam requirements and understanding your grades.

To calculate your required final exam grade, use the formula: Required Final Grade = (Target Overall Grade – (Current Grade × (1 – Final Exam Weight))) ÷ Final Exam Weight. For example, if your current grade is 70%, your target is 75%, and the final is worth 20%, you would need: (75 – (70 × 0.8)) ÷ 0.2 = 95%.

If the calculator shows a required grade higher than 100%, it means it is mathematically impossible to reach your target grade with the final exam alone, unless your institution offers extra credit. You may need to adjust your target grade or speak with your instructor about alternative ways to improve your mark.

A test score percentage is calculated by dividing the number of points you earned by the total possible points, then multiplying by 100. For example, scoring 45 out of 50 points is calculated as (45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90%.

While boundaries vary by institution and exam board, a common UK percentage-to-grade mapping is: 70%+ (A / First Class), 60-69% (B / Upper Second 2:1), 50-59% (C / Lower Second 2:2), 40-49% (D / Third Class), and below 40% (F / Fail).
