How to Calculate a Tip

Tipping is simply a percentage of your bill, added on top to reward service. The math is easy: Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). Our calculator handles the arithmetic so you can focus on the etiquette.

🧮

Step 1: Find the Subtotal

Look at your bill for the amount before tax and any included service charge. This is the base figure you’ll apply your tip percentage to.

%

Step 2: Choose Your %

Standard rates vary by country and service quality. 10–12.5% is typical in the UK, 15–20% in the US, and higher for exceptional service.

👥

Step 3: Split (Optional)

Divide the grand total (bill + tax + tip) by the number of people at the table to get each person’s fair share.

Calculate Your Tip Instantly

Fill in your bill amount, pick a tip percentage, and optionally split the total with your group.

How Much to Tip by Service

Tipping norms vary dramatically by service type and country. Use these 2026 guidelines as a baseline — local customs and the quality of service should always take precedence.

Service Type Typical Tip Region Notes
Restaurants (sit-down)10–12.5%UK / EuropeCheck if service charge is already included
Restaurants (sit-down)18–20%USA / Canada15% is acceptable but increasingly low
Bartenders£1–£2 per drinkUK / USAOr 15–20% of a running tab
Taxi / Rideshare10–15%Most countriesRound up for short trips
Food delivery10–15% (min £3)UK / USAMore for bad weather or large orders
Hairdresser / Barber10–15%UK / USASeparate tips for assistant if applicable
Hotel housekeeping£2–£5 / nightUSALeave daily, not at checkout
Hotel porter£1–£2 per bagMost countriesMore for heavy or awkward items

Coffee shop counterOptional £0.50–£1UK / USADigital tip jars are common now
Any service0%Japan / Korea / ChinaTipping can be considered rude
💡 Quick rule of thumb: When in doubt, 15% is a safe default for most sit-down services in the UK and US. Always check if a service charge is already added to your bill — in that case, an additional tip is optional and only for exceptional service.

Tip Calculator FAQ

Everything diners, travellers, and groups ask about calculating tips and splitting bills fairly.

To calculate a tip, multiply your bill amount by the tip percentage (expressed as a decimal). For example, a 15% tip on a £50 bill is £50 × 0.15 = £7.50. The total you pay is the bill plus the tip (£50 + £7.50 = £57.50). Our calculator handles this instantly — just enter your bill and percentage.

In the UK, 10–12.5% is standard in restaurants if a service charge isn’t already included. In the US, 18–20% is now considered the baseline for sit-down restaurants, with 15% viewed as acceptable but on the lower end. For exceptional service, 25% or more is increasingly common. Always check your bill first — many UK restaurants automatically add a 12.5% service charge.

Etiquette experts generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, because sales tax is not a service provided by the staff. However, some people tip on the total with tax included, especially when the tax amount is small or when service was outstanding. Our calculator lets you toggle between both methods.

Add the tip amount (and tax, if any) to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. For example, a £80 bill with a £16 tip (20%) totals £96. Split four ways, each person pays £24. Our calculator does this automatically when you enter the group size — just set the “Number of People” field and you’ll see the per-person total instantly.

15% is still considered acceptable in most US restaurants for standard service, but the post-pandemic norm has shifted toward 18–20% as the baseline. For average service in 2026, 18% is a safe default. 15% may be interpreted as lukewarm approval of the service. In the UK, 15% is generally generous for table service where no service charge is applied.

For takeout, a small tip (£1–£3 or 5–10%) is customary when staff packages and hands over your order. For food delivery, 10–15% of the bill (or a minimum of £3–£5) is standard, with higher amounts for long distances, bad weather, or large orders. Delivery drivers keep the full tip, while takeout tips may be shared among kitchen and counter staff.

Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Scandinavia generally do not expect tips — service is considered included in the price. In some of these countries, leaving a tip can even be considered rude or confusing. Always check local customs when travelling, and remember that even in tip-heavy cultures like the US, tipping is technically voluntary.

A common rule of thumb is £1 / $1–2 per drink at the bar, or 15–20% of your total tab if you’re running one. If the bartender is making complex cocktails or providing exceptional service, lean toward 20% or more. For a single pint or simple drink, rounding up to the nearest pound is usually sufficient.

If your bill shows a “service charge” or “discretionary service charge” (commonly 12.5% in UK restaurants), that is the tip. You don’t need to add anything more. In the UK this charge often goes directly to staff; in some countries it may go to the house. For truly exceptional service, you can leave a few pounds extra in cash directly to your server.
