How Dividend Tax Works
Dividend income is taxed differently than standard employment income. Understanding the allowances and bands is key to accurate financial planning.
The Dividend Allowance
Every individual has a tax-free Dividend Allowance. For the 2024/25 tax year onwards, this is set at £500. You pay no tax on the first £500 of dividend income, regardless of your other earnings.
Personal Allowance Priority
HMRC applies your standard Personal Allowance (£12,570) to your non-dividend income (like salary) first. This is the most tax-efficient method, leaving your dividend income to be taxed at the specific dividend rates.
ISA Protection
Dividends generated from shares held within a Stocks and Shares ISA or a Lifetime ISA are entirely tax-free. They do not count towards your £500 Dividend Allowance or your total taxable income.
Current UK Dividend Tax Rates
The tax rate you pay on dividends above your £500 allowance depends on your total taxable income band.
| Income Tax Band | Taxable Income Threshold | Dividend Tax Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Allowance | Up to £12,570 | 0% |
| Dividend Allowance | First £500 of dividends | 0% |
| Basic Rate | £12,571 to £50,270 | 8.75% |
| Higher Rate | £50,271 to £125,140 | 33.75% |
| Additional Rate | Over £125,140 | 39.35% |
Dividend Tax FAQ
Everything you need to know about reporting and paying tax on your share dividends.
The Dividend Allowance is the amount of dividend income you can earn each tax year without paying any tax on it. For the 2024/25 tax year and onwards, this allowance is set at £500.
Dividend tax rates depend on your income tax band: Basic rate taxpayers pay 8.75%, Higher rate taxpayers pay 33.75%, and Additional rate taxpayers pay 39.35% on dividend income above the £500 allowance.
No. Any dividends received from shares held within a Stocks and Shares ISA or a Lifetime ISA are completely tax-free and do not count towards your Dividend Allowance or taxable income.
If your dividend income exceeds the £500 allowance, you must report it to HMRC. This is typically done through a Self Assessment tax return, or by contacting HMRC directly to have your tax code adjusted if you do not usually file a return.
