Cake Serving Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about working out how many portions your cake will give.

The number of servings depends on the cake’s surface area and the size of slice used. A typical party slice is around 2 inches by 2 inches, while a smaller wedding or dessert slice is around 1 inch by 2 inches, giving roughly double the servings.

A party slice is a generous portion typically served at birthdays and casual celebrations, around 2 inches by 2 inches. A wedding or finger slice is a smaller, neater portion, around 1 inch by 2 inches, commonly used when a cake is served alongside other desserts.

To calculate servings for a tiered cake, work out the surface area of each individual tier, divide each by your chosen slice size to get servings per tier, then add the results together for the total number of servings.

Standard serving calculations assume a cake of typical height, usually around 4 inches with filling. Taller cakes can sometimes be cut into two layers per slice height, effectively increasing the number of servings from the same surface area.
