BMI Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know about Body Mass Index, healthy weight ranges, and how to interpret your results.
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether your weight is in a healthy range. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
For metric units, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For imperial units, divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, then multiply the result by 703.
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. A BMI below 18.5 is classed as underweight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obese.
BMI is a useful general screening tool but does not directly measure body fat percentage. It can be less accurate for athletes with high muscle mass, pregnant women, children, and older adults, so it should be considered alongside other health indicators.
Your healthy weight range is the span of weights that correspond to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your specific height. This calculator shows your personal healthy weight range automatically once you enter your height.
