BoE Base Rate Typical Tracker Rate Typical 2-Year Fixed Typical SVR
0.50%~1.50%~2.00%~3.50%
1.00%~2.00%~2.75%~4.00%
3.00%~4.00%~4.50%~6.00%

5.00%~6.00%~5.75%~8.00%
5.25%~6.25%~6.00%~8.25%
⚠️ Important Note: Tracker rates usually sit at “Base Rate + X%”. Standard Variable Rates (SVR) are set entirely at the lender’s discretion and do not always move in exact lockstep with the Base Rate, though they generally trend in the same direction.

Base Rate FAQ

Everything you need to know about the Bank of England Base Rate and how it impacts your personal finances.

The Bank of England Base Rate, also known as the official bank rate, is the interest rate that the Bank of England charges other banks for short-term loans. It is the foundation for all other interest rates in the UK, influencing everything from mortgage rates to savings accounts.

If you have a variable, tracker, or Standard Variable Rate (SVR) mortgage, your interest rate will typically move in line with the Base Rate. When the Base Rate goes up, your monthly repayments increase. If you are on a fixed-rate mortgage, your rate is locked in for the agreed term and will not change until your fixed period ends.

Yes. Generally, when the Bank of England raises the Base Rate, banks and building societies increase the interest rates they offer on savings accounts. This means your savings can grow faster, although the exact rate depends on your specific provider and account type.

The Base Rate is set by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of England. The MPC meets eight times a year to assess economic conditions, particularly inflation, and votes on whether to raise, lower, or maintain the current rate to meet the government’s 2% inflation target.
