Rising Sign FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating and understanding your Ascendant.

Your Rising Sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was appearing on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of your birth. It represents your outer personality, first impressions, physical appearance, and the ‘mask’ you wear when interacting with the world.

The Rising Sign changes approximately every 2 hours, meaning it moves about 1 degree every 4 minutes. For the most accurate calculation, your birth time should be exact to the minute. If your birth time is off by even 15-20 minutes, your Rising Sign degree will shift significantly, and in some cases, it could change the sign entirely if you were born near the cusp.

The Ascendant is calculated using spherical astronomy. The calculator determines the Local Sidereal Time (LST) based on your birth date, time, and longitude. It then calculates the Right Ascension of the Midheaven (RAMC) and uses your latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic (approx. 23.44°) to find the exact degree of the ecliptic intersecting the eastern horizon.

If you don’t know your exact birth time, you cannot accurately calculate your Rising Sign. You can check your official birth certificate, hospital records, or ask older family members. Without an exact time, astrologers often use a technique called ‘chart rectification’ to estimate the time based on major life events, or they will simply read your chart with the Sun and Moon signs.

In astrology, these three form your ‘Big Three’. Your Sun Sign represents your core identity and ego. Your Moon Sign represents your emotional inner world and subconscious. Your Rising Sign represents your outer personality, physical body, and how others initially perceive you. Together, they provide a complete picture of your personality.

The Rising Sign is strictly dependent on your geographic location on Earth at the time of birth. Because the Earth is a sphere, the zodiac sign rising in the East at a specific moment is completely different depending on whether you are in London, New York, or Tokyo. Latitude and longitude pinpoint your exact location to calculate the local horizon.
