Family Time FAQ

Thoughtful answers to the questions we all ask about time with our parents, aging gracefully, and staying connected across the miles.

The calculator estimates the time remaining by subtracting your parent’s current age from their estimated life expectancy to find the years left. It then multiplies the years left by how often you visit (visits per year) and the average length of each visit (in days). Phone and video calls are added separately by multiplying weekly calls by 52 weeks and the years remaining. The result is shown in total days, giving a clear picture of the moments you have left to share.

The default life expectancy used is 82 years, which is close to the global average and the UK average for a combined male-female figure. You can adjust this number based on your parent’s health, family history, or the specific life expectancy statistics for your country. For reference, UK life expectancy is approximately 79 for men and 83 for women, while in the US it is around 76 for men and 81 for women.

There is no single right answer, as it depends on distance, work commitments, and family dynamics. However, gerontologists and family counsellors generally recommend seeing aging parents at least once a month if you live within reasonable distance. For those who live far away, a combination of longer visits a few times a year plus regular weekly phone or video calls helps maintain a strong emotional bond. The key is consistency rather than frequency.

Focus on quality over quantity. Put away phones during visits, ask about their childhood and life stories, record their memories (audio or written), cook meals together, look through old photo albums, and take short walks. Small gestures like a weekly 15-minute call, sending photos of grandchildren, or writing a letter mean more than occasional long visits filled with distractions. The goal is presence, not just proximity.

Distance is challenging but manageable. Many adult children in this situation schedule one or two longer visits per year (such as holidays or summer breaks) and supplement them with weekly video calls. Technology like FaceTime, WhatsApp video, and shared photo albums helps bridge the gap. Some families also plan a special annual trip together. The calculator can help you see how those longer visits, combined with regular calls, still add up to meaningful time over the years.
