IVF Due Date FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating your IVF due date and tracking your pregnancy.

An IVF due date is calculated based on the exact date of your procedure. If you had an egg retrieval or IUI, 266 days (38 weeks) are added. For a 3-day embryo transfer, 263 days are added, and for a 5-day blastocyst transfer, 261 days are added. This is more accurate than the standard LMP method because the exact conception date is known.

The LMP (Last Menstrual Period) method estimates a due date by adding 280 days to the first day of your last period, assuming a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. IVF due dates are calculated from the actual procedure date (retrieval or transfer), making them much more accurate since the exact moment of conception or embryo placement is known.

IVF due dates are highly accurate—more so than natural conception due dates—because the exact date of egg retrieval, insemination, or embryo transfer is known. However, while the calculated date is precise, only about 5% of babies arrive on their exact due date. Most babies are born within a week before or after the estimated date.

Most fertility clinics recommend taking your first beta hCG blood test 9 to 14 days after egg retrieval or embryo transfer. For a 5-day blastocyst transfer, testing at day 9 or 10 is common. Testing too early can result in a false negative or detect residual hormones from trigger shots.

A 5-day embryo transfer, also known as a blastocyst transfer, involves transferring an embryo that has been cultured in the lab for five days after fertilization. By day 5, the embryo has developed into a blastocyst, which has a higher implantation rate. The due date is calculated by adding 261 days to the transfer date.

Pregnancy weeks are always calculated starting from ‘Week 0, Day 0’ two weeks before your actual conception or retrieval date. To find your current week, subtract 14 days from your retrieval/transfer date to find your ‘pregnancy start date,’ then count the weeks from there to today. This calculator does it automatically for you!

The first ultrasound after IVF is typically scheduled around 6 to 7 weeks of pregnancy (about 3 to 4 weeks after a positive pregnancy test). At this stage, the gestational sac and fetal heartbeat can usually be detected, confirming a viable clinical pregnancy.

The calculated IVF due date itself rarely changes because it is based on exact dates. However, if an early ultrasound shows the fetus is measuring significantly larger or smaller than expected, your doctor might adjust your due date slightly to account for variations in early fetal growth, though this is less common in IVF than in natural conceptions.
