The ideal height for mounting a TV is at seated eye level, which is typically 42 inches (107 cm) from the floor to the centre of the screen. This minimises neck strain during long viewing sessions. For larger TVs (65″ and above) or home theatre setups, mounting slightly below eye level — around 38–40 inches to the centre — is often more comfortable.

The standard formula is: Bottom of TV height = Seated eye level − (TV height ÷ 2). For a 16:9 TV, the screen height is roughly 49% of the diagonal size. So for a 55″ TV (about 27″ tall) with a 42″ eye level, the bottom of the TV should be approximately 42 − 13.5 = 28.5 inches from the floor.

Mounting a TV above a fireplace is common but not ideal. Mantles are usually 54–60 inches from the floor, which places the TV centre well above eye level and can cause neck strain. If you must mount above a fireplace, use a tilting or full-motion mount so you can angle the screen downward, and keep the TV as low as safely possible.

For 4K UHD TVs, SMPTE and industry guidelines recommend a viewing distance of 1 to 1.5 times the screen diagonal. For a 55″ TV, that’s roughly 4.5 to 7 feet (1.4 to 2.1 metres). For 1080p TVs, the recommended distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal. Sitting too close reveals pixel structure; sitting too far reduces immersion.

Yes. Fixed (flat) mounts should place the TV centre exactly at eye level. Tilting mounts allow you to mount slightly higher (2–4 inches) because you can angle the screen down. Full-motion (articulating) mounts offer the most flexibility and are ideal for rooms with multiple seating positions or where the TV must be mounted higher than ideal.

Because most people watch TV in bed while reclined or lying down, a bedroom TV is typically mounted higher than a living room TV — often 60–68 inches from the floor to the centre. A tilting mount is strongly recommended so the screen can be angled down toward the viewer, reducing neck strain.

A 65″ 16:9 TV is approximately 32 inches tall. With a standard 42″ seated eye level, the centre should be at 42″ and the bottom at about 26 inches from the floor. Because 65″ TVs are large, many installers prefer to mount them slightly lower — around 24–26 inches to the bottom — so the top of the screen doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Measure the diagonal screen size from corner to corner (excluding the bezel). For a 16:9 TV, multiply the diagonal by 0.872 to get the width and by 0.490 to get the height. Also measure the VESA mounting pattern on the back (the distance between the four mounting holes, e.g. 400 × 400 mm) to ensure your wall mount is compatible.
