Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
CKD stages are defined by the National Kidney Foundation (KDIGO) based on eGFR ranges, measured in mL/min/1.73m².

eGFR stands for estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. It is a calculation that estimates how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood, based on your serum creatinine level, age, and sex, and is measured in mL/min/1.73m².
An eGFR of 90 or above is generally considered normal kidney function, provided there are no other signs of kidney damage. Values between 60 and 89 may still be normal for some people, especially as kidney function gradually declines with age.
This calculator uses the CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation, the race-free formula recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology for estimating kidney function from serum creatinine, age, and sex.
CKD is generally staged as G1 (eGFR 90+, normal), G2 (60-89, mildly decreased), G3a (45-59), G3b (30-44), G4 (15-29, severely decreased), and G5 (below 15, kidney failure). Staging also depends on markers such as protein in the urine.
Some lifestyle factors, such as hydration, diet, blood pressure control, and avoiding certain medications, can influence creatinine levels. However, any change in kidney function should be discussed with a doctor, who can identify the underlying cause and appropriate management.
