Most Teaching Assistants are paid an hourly rate set against a local authority pay scale point. Your salary is calculated by multiplying your hourly rate by your contracted hours per week, then by the number of weeks you actually work — or by 52 weeks if you work all year round.
Term-time only (TTO) staff are contracted for around 38 to 39 weeks a year rather than 52. Because they still build up statutory holiday entitlement, schools usually apply a pro-rata multiplier, commonly around 1.20 to 1.21, to the weeks actually worked so that holiday pay is spread across the year rather than paid as a separate lump sum.
Term-time only Teaching Assistants are not contracted to work during school holidays, but they are entitled to paid annual leave. Rather than receiving separate holiday pay, most local authorities average this entitlement across the term-time weeks using a pro-rata multiplier, so pay is usually spread evenly across 12 monthly instalments.
