Teacher Pay & Allowances FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about teacher salaries, pay progression, and additional allowances in the UK.
The UK teacher pay scale is divided into the Main Pay Range (M1 to M6) for early-career and developing teachers, and the Upper Pay Range (U1 to U3) for experienced teachers who have met the standards for upper pay progression. There are also separate, higher pay scales for Inner London, Outer London, and the London Fringe.
A Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) allowance is additional pay for teachers who take on extra responsibilities beyond their normal classroom duties. TLR 1 is for significant, sustained responsibility (e.g., Head of Department), TLR 2 is for a specific, time-limited project or focused responsibility, and TLR 3 is for a temporary responsibility.
Teachers working in London receive a geographic allowance to account for the higher cost of living. Inner London receives the highest uplift, followed by Outer London, and then the London Fringe. This applies to both the Main and Upper Pay Ranges.
No, pay progression is not automatic. Teachers must undergo an annual performance review and meet the Teachers’ Standards, as well as any specific objectives set by their headteacher, to progress to the next pay point.
