Understanding How Relief is Applied
The UK government incentivises retirement saving by offering tax relief. Depending on your pension type and tax band, the mechanism differs slightly. Here is how it works in practice.
You Make Your Contribution
You pay money into your pension from your bank account (Relief at Source) or it is deducted from your salary (Net Pay).
Basic Rate Relief is Added
For Relief at Source pensions, the provider automatically claims 20% from HMRC and adds it to your pot. For every £80 you pay, £100 is invested.
Claim Higher/Additional Relief
If you pay tax at 40% or 45%, you are entitled to more relief. You must actively claim this extra amount back through Self Assessment or a tax code adjustment.
Grow Tax-Free
Once the money (and all its tax relief) is inside your pension wrapper, it grows free of UK Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax until you retire.

Pension Tax Relief FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about claiming tax relief on your UK pension contributions.
For every £80 you contribute to a 'relief at source' pension, the government adds £20, making it £100 in your pension pot. This represents 20% basic rate tax relief.
Higher rate taxpayers can claim an additional 20% tax relief. This is typically done by adjusting your tax code through HMRC or by declaring the gross pension contribution on your Self Assessment tax return.
Under 'Relief at Source' (common for personal pensions and SIPPs), you contribute from post-tax income, and the provider claims basic relief. Under 'Net Pay' (common for workplace pensions), contributions are taken from your salary before tax is calculated, giving you immediate relief at your highest tax rate.
Yes. You can only receive tax relief on contributions up to 100% of your relevant UK earnings, or the Annual Allowance (£60,000 for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 tax years), whichever is lower.
