Fixed Rate Bonds FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about fixed rate bonds in the UK.
A fixed rate bond is a type of savings account where you deposit a lump sum for a set term, typically 6 months to 5 years, in exchange for a fixed interest rate that does not change for the duration of the term.
If interest is paid at maturity, it typically compounds annually over the term, so each year’s interest is added to the balance before the next year’s interest is calculated. If interest is paid out annually or monthly instead, it is usually calculated as simple interest on the original deposit rather than compounded.
Most fixed rate bonds do not allow early withdrawals, or only permit them with a significant interest penalty or loss of the fixed rate. You should only lock money into a fixed rate bond that you are confident you will not need before the term ends.
Fixed rate bonds held with UK-authorised banks and building societies are typically covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000 per person, per institution, though this can vary, so it is worth checking the specific provider’s protection status.
