Distance Calculation FAQ
Everything you need to know about estimating travel distances, times, and fuel costs in the UK.
Our calculator uses the Haversine formula to determine the straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance between two city centres, then applies a standard road network multiplier (approximately 1.3x) to estimate realistic driving mileage.
The estimated travel time is based on average, free-flowing speeds for the selected mode of transport (e.g., 50 mph for cars). It does not account for real-time traffic congestion, roadworks, or weather conditions, so you should always allow extra time for your journey.
The fuel cost is an estimate based on your vehicle’s miles per gallon (MPG) and an average UK fuel price (approx. £6.50 per gallon). Actual costs will vary depending on your vehicle’s real-world efficiency, driving style, and current local fuel prices.
Yes. The calculator includes options for Car, Train, and Walking. Selecting a different transport mode adjusts the average speed used to calculate your estimated journey time.
