Body Fat Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know about body fat percentage, the Navy method, and body composition.
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat percentage from measurements of neck, waist, height, and (for women) hip circumference, using a logarithmic formula validated against underwater weighing.
Healthy ranges vary by sex and age. For men, a generally accepted fitness range is roughly 14 to 17 percent, and for women roughly 21 to 24 percent, with athletes typically measuring lower and essential fat levels forming the minimum needed for health.
The Navy circumference method is a widely used estimate with a typical margin of error of around 3 to 4 percent compared to laboratory methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing. It is best used to track trends over time rather than as an exact clinical measurement.
BMI is calculated from height and weight alone and does not distinguish fat from muscle. Body fat percentage estimates the proportion of total body mass that is fat, giving a more direct picture of body composition than BMI alone.
