Duty Deferment Interest FAQ
Everything you need to know about how interest is estimated on deferred or late customs duty payments.
A duty deferment account lets importers delay payment of customs duty, excise duty, and import VAT, with a single consolidated payment collected around the 15th of the following month instead of paying at the time each shipment clears customs.
Interest is generally calculated on the outstanding duty amount using a simple daily interest formula: Amount Owed × Annual Interest Rate × Number of Days ÷ 365. Interest usually accrues from the date payment was originally due until the date it is actually paid.
Interest typically starts accruing the day after the scheduled direct debit payment date is missed, and continues to accrue daily until the outstanding balance, including any interest already added, is paid in full.
Yes. The interest rate applied to late or deferred customs payments is reviewed periodically and can change over time, so importers should always confirm the current published rate before relying on any calculation for financial reporting.
