Blood Pressure FAQ

Everything you need to know about blood pressure readings, categories, and cardiovascular health metrics.

A normal blood pressure reading is typically less than 120/80 mmHg. This means a systolic pressure (top number) of less than 120 and a diastolic pressure (bottom number) of less than 80.

Systolic pressure measures the force of blood against your artery walls when your heart beats. Diastolic pressure measures the force when your heart rests between beats. Both numbers are crucial for assessing cardiovascular health.

Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) is the average pressure in a patient’s arteries during one cardiac cycle. It is calculated as Diastolic Pressure + 1/3(Systolic Pressure – Diastolic Pressure). A normal MAP is typically between 70 and 100 mmHg, which is necessary to ensure adequate blood flow to vital organs.

If your blood pressure reading is higher than 180/120 mmHg, wait five minutes and test again. If it remains this high, it is considered a hypertensive crisis. If you also experience chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness/weakness, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care immediately.
