Energy Bill FAQ

Everything you need to know about how your electricity and gas bill is calculated.

The Ofgem energy price cap limits the maximum unit rate and standing charge that suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs. It is reviewed every three months and does not cap your total bill, so your actual cost still depends on how much energy you use.

Ofgem’s current Typical Domestic Consumption Values estimate average annual usage at around 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas for a dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. Actual usage varies with home size, insulation, and household size.

A standing charge is a fixed daily amount you pay for being connected to the gas or electricity network, regardless of how much energy you use. It covers costs like maintaining pipes, wires, and meters, and is charged in addition to your unit rate.

Reducing usage through better insulation, efficient appliances, and lower heating temperatures helps directly, while switching to a competitive fixed tariff, checking eligibility for support schemes, and correcting inaccurate meter readings can also reduce what you pay per unit.
