Auto Enrolment FAQ

Everything you need to know about how workplace pension auto enrolment works.

Auto enrolment is a UK law requiring employers to automatically enrol eligible workers into a workplace pension scheme and make contributions on their behalf, unless the worker chooses to opt out.

Qualifying earnings are the band of an employee’s pay that pension contributions are calculated on. They sit between a lower and upper threshold set each tax year, so only earnings within that band count toward minimum contributions.

The statutory minimum total contribution is 8% of qualifying earnings, made up of at least 3% from the employer, with the remainder made up by the employee, which often includes tax relief added by the government.

Workers are typically eligible if they are aged between 22 and State Pension age, earn above the minimum earnings threshold, and usually work in the UK. Workers outside these criteria may still be able to opt in.
