Army Salary FAQ
Everything you need to know about how Army pay is calculated and what it includes.
Army pay is built from several parts. Basic pay is set by your pay grade (rank) and years of service using the official DFAS pay table. On top of that, most soldiers also receive BAS, a tax-free food allowance, and BAH, a tax-free housing allowance that varies by duty station and dependency status. Special and incentive pays, such as jump pay or hazardous duty pay, are added separately.
Basic pay is taxable and depends only on rank and years of service. BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) is a flat, tax-free food allowance that is the same nationwide for all enlisted soldiers and a separate flat rate for all officers. BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is a tax-free housing allowance that changes based on your duty station ZIP code, rank, and whether you have dependents.
No. Basic pay, BAS, and BAH rates are set by the Department of Defense and apply equally across the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Pay differs by rank, years of service, location, and dependency status rather than by branch.
Basic pay typically increases once a year, effective January 1, based on a raise set by Congress in the annual National Defense Authorization Act. Soldiers also move to a higher pay rate automatically as they cross years-of-service thresholds, and usually receive a rank-based increase upon promotion.
