Common Leak Water Wastage

Typical baseline flow rates and estimated yearly waste for common household leaks (based on a continuous 24-hour leak at £4.50 per m³).

Leak Type Flow Rate Yearly Waste Est. Yearly Cost
Slow Dripping Tap1 L/hr8,760 L~ £39.42
Fast Dripping Tap4 L/hr35,040 L~ £157.68
Steady Stream (Tap)20 L/hr175,200 L~ £788.40
Running Toilet (Silent)200 L/hr1,752,000 L~ £7,884.00
Burst Pipe (Moderate)500+ L/hr4,380,000+ L~ £19,710+
⚠️ Important Note: This calculator provides a theoretical estimate based on continuous flow. Actual waste may vary depending on water pressure, whether the leak is intermittent, and if your water meter includes combined water supply and sewerage charges.

Water Leak Cost FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating, identifying, and managing household water leaks.

A slow dripping tap can waste around 1 to 4 litres of water per hour. Over the course of a year, this adds up to between 8,700 and 35,000 litres of wasted water, which can significantly and unnecessarily increase your water bill.

To calculate the cost, determine the leak’s flow rate in litres per hour, multiply by 24 hours and the number of days it has been leaking to get the total litres. Divide by 1,000 to convert to cubic metres (m³), then multiply by your water supplier’s rate per m³.

Yes, a silently running toilet can waste up to 200 litres of water per hour or more. This can result in thousands of litres wasted every single week, leading to a surprisingly high spike in your water bill if left unaddressed.

Your water and sewerage tariff rate can be found on your latest water bill, usually expressed as a cost per cubic metre (m³). You can also find this information on your local water supplier’s website or by contacting their customer service department directly.
