Dart Charge FAQ
Everything you need to know about paying the Dartford Crossing toll and avoiding penalty charges.
The Dart Charge is the toll fee required to use the Dartford Crossing, which includes the Dartford Tunnels and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. It applies to most vehicles travelling between Kent and Essex across the River Thames.
You must pay the Dart Charge by midnight on the day after you cross. For example, if you cross on Monday, you must pay by 11:59 PM on Tuesday. Payments can be made online, via the official app, by phone, or at selected retail outlets.
Yes. By registering for a free Dart Charge Account, you receive a discounted rate on every crossing. For example, cars drop from £2.50 to £2.00 per crossing, and HGVs also receive proportional discounts. You can also set up auto-pay for convenience.
If you fail to pay by midnight the day after crossing, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). The standard penalty is £70, but this is reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. Repeated non-payment can lead to increased fines and enforcement action.
